Revisiting “Mr. Fujino” — The “Turn” of the “Deep Structure”
Speaker: Professor Tian Zhongshi
Host: Associate Professor Huo Fei

“Mr. Fujino” is a relatively unique text within Dawn Blossoms Plucked at Dusk. Scholars in China generally consider “Mr. Fujino” to be an “essay,” whereas in Japan, it is commonly regarded as a “novel.” As Lu Xun confesses in the preface to Dawn Blossoms Plucked at Dusk, “These ten pieces are transcribed from memory, and while they may differ somewhat from the actual events, this is all I remember now.” This approach aligns with the creative philosophy proposed by Sen Ouwai(もりおうがい) in “In This Way” (『このように』、1912), where he states: “A novel is fictional in the sense that it represents facts as real events. But these events were not facts from the outset; rather, they were intentionally treated as fiction and used creatively, containing life and value.” What Lu Xun expresses in his work is an “inner reality,” or the “true” essence, which aligns with the characteristics of “modern novelistic” narrative strategies. Exploring the “deep structure” of “Mr. Fujino” is significant for deepening the study of Lu Xun's literature and even for opening up new perspectives on Dawn Blossoms Plucked at Dusk.
